HOBART RIVULET
"AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE."
COMPLETING THE DIVERSION.
REMOVAL OP SILT.
The Public Works Committee, at last
night's meeting of the City Council, re-
ported that on th« motion for adjourn-
ment at the last meeting of the Council,
Alderman Oldham referred to the primi-
tivo method employed for removing silt
from the Hobart Rivulet. A report had
been obtained from tho city engineer in
connection with the "matter, and ho
stated that the work was being carried
out in the usual manner and that every
deep trench had' tho spoil removed from
it in thc same way. Thero were in-
numerable other methods of doing this
work, but no moro economical method
than the one in usc, excentinc by means
of grab dredgers or mechanical ele-
vators. Thc silt and other debris could
bo caught higher up thc rivulet by
constructing a weir near Gore-strcct,
and this was badly needed, as it would
regulate the flow of water in flood
time. Tho committee recommended
that ono of the following two me
thods bc adopted: (a) That a weir be
built as suggested, or (b) that th»
Hobart 'Rivulet diversion and Lower
Collins-street Improvement Committee
take immcdiato stcP3 to complete the
rivulet diversion work in Lower Col-
lins-street.
Alderman Wignall said either of the
recommendations Vould ibo very ex-
pensive.
Alderman' Rogers said the lower por-
tion was an absolute disgrace, and thi
most unslehtly portion of tho city. It
would bc best to carry out tho rim
let diversion.
Alderman Oldham confessed to beiag
terribly disappointed with the rcpor..
Thc method of dealing with tho silt
was very primitive, and must cost £1 a
loud to handle. The "Bellamy Buttress"
in the middle of the creek was a menace,
and there was çrave danger of ono of
tho creeks-Park-street or the rivulet
being blocked with silt. If a flood fol-
lowed that event, enormous datnaee
would be done.. The rivulet was a dis-
gusting sight. Refuse of all descrip-
tions accumulated there, and he . had
many times seen rats fcedinff on it.
Alderman Grant moved that the mat-
ter be referred to thc Rivulet Diver-
sion Committee for an estimate of tho
cost of completing; the scheme.
This course was agreed to.
