No Metropolitan
Run For
Friendly Feeling
SYDNEY, Monday.
Friendly Feeling, one of the -favourites
for the Metropolitan since weights were
issued, was a shock scratching from the race
to-day.
Two other heavily-backed
horses, Tarlen (Epsom) and
Advocate (Metropolitan) also
are doubtful runners, because
of injuries.
Tarlen ran a nail into her
foot after racing at Rosehill on
Saturday, and Advocate had a
similar accident.
Friendly Feeling had been
backed for a fortune for the
Metropolitan, but her connections
considered her third in the Hill
Stakes last Saturday was not a
good enough trial.
She will now be set for the
Melbourne Cup.
Tarlen's trainor, T. J. Smith,
said the injury had him worried,
but he would not know until
about Thursday whether she
would be able to run in the Ep-
som.
The nail penetrated the fleshy
part of the hoof near the heel.
She favoured her injured leg
when exercised at Randwick to-
day. Advocate's injury is not as
serious.
Queensland jockey G. Swadon
will ride lightly-weighted Queens-
land horse, Kagaru, in the Ep-
som.
Silver Phantom's price has
cased to double the odds avail-
able last week because of his
defeat by Carioca in the Theo
Marks Quality on Saturday.
Trainer Jack Green to-day de-
nied the horse had become lame.
No definite decision has yet
been made whether country gal-
loper Rapid River will run in the
Epsom, but bookmakers are
keeping hirn at safe odds.
Carioca may start odds-on for
for both the Epsom and the
Metropolitan, bookmakers said
to-day.
Carioca is now a very short
priced Epsom favourite, and if
heavy backing continuues or
Tarlen is withdrawn, he will be
odds on.
If Carioca wins the Epsom he
cannot be penalised for the Met-
ropolitan,- and will- be odds-ori for
that race.
Carioca was solidly supported
to-day and taken in 'doubles with
Hydrogen for £10,000.
There was also heavy demand
for High Law, who was coupled
with Lord Saunders and Priory
for £30;000 and with Hydrogen
for £10,000.
Melbourne jockey W. A. Smith
has been engaged to ride Lord
Saunders.
