GUICHEN BAY.
[Correspondent]
Monday, May 7.
During the past week we have had a few showers of
rain, which have caused the grass to spring up fast, and
given the land about the Bay quite a green and pleasant
appearance; but there has been very little rain up the
country, and, in consequence, feed for stock is scarce
If we do not get more rain shortly it will prove of
serious loss to the settlers and others who liavc stock.
The weather, however, appears to hare taken a
change; it bas been raining on and off since Saturday
evening.
Mr. Ormerod started for Mount Gainbier on Satur
day, where, it is reported, the Eoad Board will meet
some day this week. It will be really imposing a vast
amount of inconvenience on our member if he should
have to travel to Mount Gambier this month, a dis
tance of 85 miles; to Penola next month, 72 miles;
and to Mosquito Plains the following mouth, 70 miles,
especially in the depth of winter. It would be, most
decidedly, more convenient for the members to meet at
some central point. The Reedy Creek (McDonald's)
would be as near central as possible Itetweeu the four
points—Mount Gauibier, Penola, Mosquito Plains, and
Kobe. Another advantage gained by this arrangement
would be, the members of each place would hare to
travel over the wain lines they would have to deal
with, and be able to inspect the works in progress.
Some short lime back we stated tUat the saud was
accumulating on the newly-inadc road between Mr.
Ekers's shop and Mr. Stepliens's store. It U a great
pity that this short bit (about a chain long) should i>e
allowed to remain in the state it is, especially when the
cost of removing the sand and making the road good
would not exceed £10.
A party has started in the fishing Une. Yesterday,
for the first time in the nnnnls of Kobe, we heard the
cry of " Fish, oh !" but if he wishes to make a lasting
business of it, he must be more moderate in his prices.
Mr. W. Warren has sold to Mr. Betts a section of 11C
acres, wliich the purchaser intends dividing and erecting
cottages on, and letting them as farms. He has already
secured tenants.
