MELBOURNE, December 21.
Wheat was sold by auction to-day at
5s. 9d.
Business generally is very dull.
The weather is fine.
In the Assembly the Appropriation
Bill was read a second time, and it is ex
pected to pass through all its stages to
night.
In the discussion upon the defences,
the Government said they were doing all
that was possible to make them efficient.
Extracts were read from the Agent-
General's letter, stating that England had
promised to protect her colonies.
The Council arc discussing the Pay
ment of Members Bill. Some attempts
are being made to exclude the members
of Council from the payment.
SIDNEY, December 21.
A fire broke out at the establishment
of Sands the bookseller early this mor
ning, but it was qoickly suppressed.
The weather is showery.
