The League of Young Liberals, under
the presidency of Lord Loreburn (Lord
Chancellor), welcomed at luncheon at
Westminster yesterday deputations from
Bulgaria, Armenia, Montenegro, and Fin
land in connection with the Gladstone
centenary, and the deputations paid tri
butes to the deceased statesman as the
humanitarian friend of small nations.
Portraits, a bust, manuscripts, a wood
man’s axe, and other articles connected ;
■with Mr. Gladstone were exhibited at i
Southwark.
Celebrations took place in Ireland, New \
York. Athens, Italy, Eastern BournelU, ;
and Capetown, At the latter place the j
•Premier, Mr. J. X. Merriman, remarked j
that South Africa owed its advance to
