CITY COUNCIL.
THE UNIVERSITY SITE,
tithe fortnightly meriting of the Oity
Council was held 'tills afternoon. There
were presentAldermen T. Wilson

Thompson, ami the town cleric (Air. W.
II. G. Marshall), An apology was re
ceived from Alderman Fleming, owing to
indisposition.
Prom Mr. George Sampson, stating that
he contemplated relinquishing the organ
recitals Winch he had been giving for
some 12 years, and suggesting that if the
council desired a continuance of the re
citals, steps must he taken to relieve liim
of the financial and business worries con
nected therewith. Referred to the Organ
Committee. Prom the Town Hull archi
tects, stating that they had made a com
mencement with the plans, specifi
cations. and estimates, tw re
, quested, ' and were arranging for t the
testing of the site for foundations.
, Prom the town clerk, 'Windsor, o&king
• if the City Council was prepared to have
the matter of contribution to the mam
teriance of Bowen Bridge referred to the
Minister for arbitration. The Mayor said
the council had already come to u deci
sion on tliis matter. It was resolved that
the council should adhere to their fortn&r
decisions Prom Air, It. Gailey, seeking
permission to erect buildings for the
Canada Cycle and (Motor Agency, Limited,
over the public sewer at the corner al
Adelaide and Creek streets. Referred to
the Works Committee, with power to
act. Prom the City Llectric Light Co.,
Limited, applying for the council a consent,
to an application for an Order in Council
authorising an extension of the com
pany's area of supply to prac
tically cover the whole of tho city.
The Mayor said this waa a very im
portant matter. The letter wwe referred
to the Lighting Committee for report.
Prom tlie fotacretary, Railway Commission
er’s Olllce, inquiring if the council would
be agreeable to Hie construction of open
level crossings instead of bridges, as a
' means of communication between tho two
portions of Victoria Park, Referred to
the Parka Committee. Prom the Undc-r
Secretary, Dqwrtment of Public Instruc
tion, advising that the (Minister accepted
the council’s offer to effect certain im
' provements on the LeioMiardhstreot front
age of tho Valley State School reserve.
Prom Hie secretary, British, Medical As
sociation, reducing to- writing the vari
ous points put forward by Hie deputation
which waited upon the (Mayor in regard
to the condition of the city streets, ,Re«
ferred to film Works Committee.
Tho Works Committee reported that
they 3iad bad under consideration tho gen
eral question of Hie disturbance of -kehh
ihg caused by the expansion, of tho wooden
block pavements ’in Queen, George, and
WickOiam st roots, and a report thereon
had been submitted by the city engineer.
In regard to Hie tender from Mr, James
Miskrcy for the erection of a shelter shed
in the grounds of the General Hospital

by the city engineer that £00 was a fnir
estimate of’the coot, whereas Air. .Mask

fore, been decided not to accept the ten

his estimate, -It was recommended tlmt

It was recommended' that, with the object
of meeting the requirements of road main
tenance, tenders should be called for a

and screenings, (ft was further recom

The renort was adopted.
The Finance Committee recommended

consideration had been given to a letter
from (Mr. Watson Clevg, stating that he
had been obliged to relinquish his position
as driver of the corporation steam road
roller because of rheumatism, and asking
tlmt some recognition should be made of
hm twenty-five years' servico, but the
committee knew of no provision empower
ing -the council to grant financial assist
ance in such a cage as thin. In regard to
nn inquiry from Mr. 13. €. Davies if the
council would be prepared to grant him a
lease of a portion of the corporation pro
perty nt the corner of Ann and Boundary
streets for factory purposes, the com
' mittee was of opinion-that it would be
undesirable to lease such a email area as
Mr. Davies required for so long a term as
ten years, and recommended reply accord
ingly.
The report was adopted.
The committee of the whole council
recommended that Hie necessary stops
should be taken for the reeision of the
for the Queensland University, with
view to the adoption of the following
resolution!—“That the Honourable the
Chief Secretary be advised, in reply to Hie

12th instant, tlmt the council, a« trustee
of tho Victoria Park, is agreeable to sur
render to tho Crown an area of 10 acres
of the park lying between Gregory-terrace
and the railway line, in event of it being
: Bolected as a site for a Queensland Uni
versity, on no other condition than that
the University shall be ereoted theron.”
The committee recommended that the
Commandant of the Commonwealth (Mili
tary (Forces, Queensland, should be in
formed that consideration had been given
to his letter setting forth the difficulties
attending the maintenance . of tho
• Senior Cadet Corps, and eeeking the co
I operation of the Oity • Council in the
establishment of an institution or club as
a means of inducing or encouraging mem
bership in the corps, and tlmt the council
was in full sympathy with the object ha
had in view. The comipitteo had under
consideration a motion by Alderman Cruse
relating to the preparation of a Bill for
submission to Parliament with the, object
of obtaining larger powers of administra
tion for the City Council, and was pleased
■to report that- Alderman Grose had, by
request, undertaken to outline the provi
sions which he thought it desirable to in
clude in the Bill.

anxious that the University should be
established in Brisbane ae soon os pos

"anything, but that hud nothiug whatever

Alderman Doggett objected to the land
being handed over unconditionally. They
should make some stipulation that the
council should bo given access to their
land at the back of the site. They had
no richfc to give tho land-away without
giving the diizcbs a any in the matter.
Alderman Hayes raid that personally
he was against the iden, but the majority
of the committee had decided Otherwise,
and he thought they Hionld let it go, ami
let tho council be unanimous.
Alderman Fraser said that be did not
support the report, die thought that they
should make some provision tfor roads.
•Alderman Buchanan said the council
would bo doing the correct thing in band
ing over the land unconditionally. The
. land belonged' to the people, and the
people would be a tang way better off
with a University than without one. With
regard to tho objections raised by Alder
man DoRgott ami (Fraser, ho pointed: jjut
