LOSS OF 5,000 MEN.
Dunkirk,, Oct. 24.
On Wednesday the allies won one of the
fiercest fights which have been fought in
the whole course of the campaign in the
Arras district.
The allies assailed the German trenches
with showers of shrapnel, and then follow.
ed up with a bayonet chasge. They car
ried the trenches and dro~ the Germans,
who lost 5,000 men, six mils back.
FIELDS COVEBED WITH DEAD.
The neighbourhood, of Fujnes, midway be.
tween Nieuport, in Belgiam, and Dun
kirk, in France, and of Dcznmude, to the
eastward, has been the sccdi of the most
sanguinary fight. The ficds are covered
with German dead.
( erman shells were verj destructive in
the town of Dixemude, wh ih is important
as the main railway centre porth of Ypres.
A house in the town in wich 27 Belgian
soldiers were resting, whet struck by one
of the great German shells collapsed com
pletely, dnd the whole 27 Bilgians perished
in the ruins.
