RUGBY UNION
BRISBANE TOO GOOD
Toowoomba Well Beaten
BRISBANE, Sunday. — Playing excellent
football, the Brisbane Rugby Union team de
feated Toowoomba at the Exhibition Grounds
yesterday by 37 points to 11. The game was
spectacular and lor most of the time ioo-
woomba offered stern opposition to the Bris
bane side, which was in great attacking mood.
In the last 20 minutes, however, several Too
woomba players faded out. of the picture in
defence and quick tries were added.
In the first half there was little between
the sides, though the Brisbane wing three-
quarters were markedly superior to tlieir
youthful and inexperienced opponents.
The individual honours of the match are
shared by V. Nicholson (winger) and D. Boyd
(forward), for Brisbane, and R. Halford
(centre) and J. Stuart (full-back) for Too
woomba. Halford played the best centre game
seen here for some years. His strong run
ning and clever penetration of the defence
stamped him as a potential State centre. He
put the Brisbane centre, Gannon, right out
of the picture. He made several tries for
Toowoomba. but the chances were lost tie-
cause of poor backing up by other Too
woomba backs.
Stuart's display at. full-back showed him
as a player of the highest class. Time after
time his clearances got Toowoomba out of
difficulties. His defence was very good.
Nicholson's display was magnificent. He is
one of the greatest Rugby Union wingers
Queensland has known. He wasted not a
single opportunity. He scored two tries and
made three others for his team. Boyd, who
was playing liis first intercity match, was in
the thick of play, all the time. He fully de
served his two tries. P. Donovan, the Uni
versity full-back, who took the place of L.
Walker (who was nursing an injured leg)
gave a fine display. His tackling was a fea
ture of the match. A. McLean was often
dangerous in attack on the other Brisbane
wing. Ryan, at scrum half, was superior to
Horan on the day. Boyd and Livermore were
the best of the Brisbane forwards. Bonis se
cured much the greater share of the ball
from the scrums.
In the Toowoomba forwards. R. Dodd and
J. Copas were the pick. The form of the in
terstate players. J. McDonald and H. Haw
kins, was disappointing.
Tries for Brisbane were scored by D. Boyd
(2), A. Wood. V. Ryan, V. Nicholson (21. W.
Me. A. McLean and C. Andrews. C. Andrews
kicked five conversion goals. R. Halford
scored a try and kicked two penalty goals
for Toowoomba and R. Meibusch kicked a
conversion goal.
The curtain-raiser was an interesting game
between Brisbane and Toowoomba Reserve
Grade teams. The Toowoomba team was down
16-3 at half-time. They staged a great re
covery in the second half and gradually wore
down the opposition. Right on time Fowler
scored a try and Simpson kicked the con
version goal which made the scores level,
16-16, after the final bell had been rung.
For Toowoomba Head. Clydesdale and Fow
ler were the outstanding backs. In the for
wards Robinson, Carroll and Harding were
the pick.
