LONDON. Thursday.— The Duke ol
Devonshire, in a speech to the Socletj
for the Overseas Settlement of Bri
tish women, said: "If we do not popu-
late the Empire it will become weakct
and will be In a more envied and
more dangerous position than it Is to
day. Although the Dominions cannol
take populations as large as would ap
pear front the map, they are capable
of supporting vastly larger numbers
than at present."
Major P. H. Wheeler, of Australia
House, declared that they received
thousands of applications a week from
aliens. They were not permitted to ga
to Australia, but he was unable to say
how long that would be the case. Ha
pointed out that there was a prepon
derance of men In Australia.
Announcing that New South Wales
and Victoria were each requesting that
240 "Little Brothers" should arrive at
the rate of 28 a month, Lord Strad-
broke, Lord Wakefield, Lord Somers,
Sir Phillip Glbbs, and Major Astor,
M.P., have sent a letter to the news
papers outlining the organisations'
aims, urging tho advantages of the
Big Brother" movement and Invit
ing applications.
