IN THE FIELDS OF SPORT : WEEK-END RESULTS.
BUNDABERG J.C. HOLDS SUCCESSFUL MEETING.
:o:
DUTCH MATT & CONTENTED ANNEX THE DOUBLE. '
: Booloongie Wins Again; Kadah and Blunder Also Score.
The- heavy rniit experienced
during the prcrerding early morn
ing hours, did not deter the
B.J.C. from holding their fort- i
nightly meeting on Salurdav
last. An inspection of thc tracK
in the forenoon revealed that it j
was wet in patches, but the Rfftss
track was safe, and it was decid
ed' to go on with the nicotine.
The attendance was surprisingly
large, arid the programme of six
gallons hnd a trot was safely car
ried through without mar or mishap.
The events were run off promptly
to scheduled time, with the exception
of one Tace, when the start was held
up pending the removal of the shoes
from Take Care II., which was fur-
' ther delayed by the erratic behaviour
of' the same animal when at the bar-
rfer." "After refusing for some time
to join the other horses at the bar
rier, he went up with a rush and
v/cnt clean through the tapes.
.Tie repeated this move again' niter
: the topes had been adjusted, but not
|,y 'special .request. When the field
was' finally despatched Take Care II.
was left standing, and followed .thu
mpin body with half a furlong of day
light between.
TWO ENQUIRIES. I
;Thc stewards held two inquiries dur
ing the afternoon, and as a result the
well-known rider P. Holland has been
suspended for throe months. After
1 winning, the Fourth Division on Boo-
loorigip, Holland was charged with
interference "caused through his mount
coming across too quickly. P .
O'Sullivan, the rider of Valmon Dnin.
said that his mount had thus been
ipterfercd with.
Jlr. McGarrignl said that lie saw
the interference, which Holland did
not admit. The stewards decided on
a month's suspension as a . penalty.
When advised of this Holland show
ed resentment, and foolishly allow
ed his feelings to swny his attitude,
for which another two months were
added by the stewards.
The running of Abuaii in the Club
Handicap did not prove to the satis
faction of the stewards, who tailed
upon the trainer, II. Page, and the
rider, J. Clarke, to .explain things.
Tlie stewards after some straight talk
ing to the parties concerned decided
to tnke no further action. .
GOOD SPRINTING. I
Racing commenced with the Third
Division for which five good sprinters
put in an appearance. Kadah, who
had won in such brilliant style at her
t\yo previous starts! was always at a
short price.. Four .'to 1. and 5 to 1
could be had about the others, though
: Sunray came into. 5 to 2 at the finish.
Kadah was quickly in front, but
over last two furlongs Contented join
ed ' issue, and momentarily assumed
command. Kadah was running in a
.sloppy patch of the track, but once
Griflin worked her over on to the
firmer going, she soon placed the
isspb beyond doubt, and won com
fortably at the end. Down the run-
fling Sunray showed dash for a few
yards, but she is not yet the Sunray
of old. I
Eight candidates were saadlod up
for the Fourth Division, some of
which were more or less cranky in
behaviour. Valmon Dain swung a
"dirty left" at Jockey P. O'Sullivan. |
Fortunately he was not too nuar at
the time, the hoof getting him fair ill
"the centre of the stomach, which
riiight easily have had more serious
results. !
BELIED IIIS NAME.
.Old Erdmk was lively in the pad
dock, and Take Care J J., belied his
name. With crab-like movements he
tnreatened -to invade the secretary's
office, and then proceeded to show a
careless 'disregard for the club pro
perty.' He retained interest iu' the
event, by delaying the start for some
considerable time, when the race did
start, he was the least interested of
any. j
This was a good betting race, 3 to 1
being on offer about the field, Walt-
Zola winding up favourite at 2 to 1.
Booloongie was always in the firing
line, and won comfortably from old
\ Eramk. It transpired that some of
the field suffered interference soon
alter the start, which may have
effected the result, but Booloongie is
at present showing very good form,
and apparently nblo to make light of
any impost in Fourth Division corn-
piny. . I
The Club Handicap, over G fur
longs, was only a working gallop for
Dutch Mat, for which he started nn
even money favourite. The other
runners were Dolores, Abdnh uud
Sunray. Early backers were lucky
to 'get 3 to 1 about Dutch Mat, but
' there was not much of this, and ho
was soon at 6 to 4 und evens. j
lAbdah never showed up in the run
ning, no was doing his best work at
the finish. i
FRACTIOUS AT THE BARRIER.
Eight was the. main for the Fifth
Division, lor which Blunder was made
an early favuorite. P. O'Sullivan was
the rider, which necessitated Blunder
carrying 2 lbs. overweight. "There
was also' good money for British
Lad and Mary Lou, which was "placed
at an average of 3 to 1.
Mary Lou yeas fractious at the bar
rier, apd. she got away badly. She
showed a fair turn of speed in run
ning right to the. leaders within a
couple of furlongs, but after being
prominent halfway down the running
- the dropped right out. Blunder went
to the front before entering .the
straight and won with ridiculous case!
The placed hjirses seemed to' appear
from nowhere.
. The Trot provided the most excite
ing finish of the day, and perhaps
.trie, most closely contested trotting
- event that has taken place at these
meetings for many : months. Mac
Wilkes was the favourite with Mas
cot second. in demand, and this was
how "they, 'finished, and only after a
great tussle in whicli Daisy lluon
also had hung on well. Lady Chimes
<ame at the finish with a great
rattle, and may have reversed the
decision had she got clear a little
sooner. '
MOSTLY MAIDENS.
There were six starters in the
Sixth Division, most of these have still
got to register their first win, but
very few of them will go that close
to "it without doing so as Bun Yan
did on Saturday. The boy on top is
new to the game of race riding, and
though lie made the mistakes com
mon to most beginners at the game,
it was unfortunate that the whole pro-
reuings were so easily seen. Bun
S'nn should have had an easy win,
Polanara only gaining the verdict by
a hea l. Mnobro carried 5 lbs. over
weight, and ridden by Power, ran on
into third place.
The concluding event was the
Second Club Handicap! the starters
for which were Suowden, Contented,
Haiiequia, ,.mby and Lanyard. Con
tented was always favourite, never
better than 6 to 4 was obtainable, aqd
the closing quote was even money.
Three to one and belter could ho
had about the others. After Snow-
den had showed the way for a couple
of furlongs, Contented was taken to
the front. Picking the dry track,
O'Sullivan lei Cpntented run along
in front and without any undue
hustle was able to withstand the
challenge thrown cut by Amby down
the running.
This win made P. O'Suliivan's
second riding success for the duy,
J. Grillin also having two mounts on
which he had scored a couple of
winning brackets. P. Holland and N.
Williams rode a winner each, and J.
Kingston drove Mac Wilkes to victory
in the Trot.
