SUPPLY BILL
Objection by Opposition
FEDERAL MOTION CARRIED
CANBERRA, Thursday.— Objection to
the Government seeking a further two
months' supply for £4,404,750, to the
end of November, was taken by the
Opposition in the House of Represen
tatives to-night, but the supply resolu
tion was carried 35 to 20.
The Treasurer (Mr. R. G. Casey) ex
plained that the existing supply ex
pired on September 30, and the new
amount, which was mainly based on
last year's figures, was to cover ex
penditure up till November 30, pending
passage of the estimates for the' full
year.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. J.
Curtin) claimed that the Government
should not seek supply for more than
one month. By its proposal the House
was being asked to agree to expendi
ture for five months of the year, with
out having had an opportunity of ap
proving the Budget. "The Government,
which had muddled trade relations, ex
asperated States, and produced utter
confusion on major national problems,
should not seek to take control of the
finances out of hands of Parliament,"
he added.
The Supply Bill then passed through
all stages, and the House rose until
to-morrow.
