RACE MEETINGS
Queensland Postponements
Q.T.C. AND ROCKHAMPTON
BRISBANE, Thursday.— The Q.T.C.
Australia Day meeting, postponed from
Saturday and Monday, will be held on
Thursday and Saturday of next week,
the BA.T.C. having voluntarily given
up Saturday's date.
ROCKHAMPTON , Thursday.—' This
morning the Rockhampton Jockey Club
committee unanimous.y decided nob to
race on Saturday and Monday. The
club will race on February 1 and 8, in
place of its anniversary meeting.
PERTH, Thursday. — The WiA..T.
Club committee to-day decided to
cancel the race meetings fixed for
Saturday and Monday.
Unfailing activity on the part of the
chairman of the Queensland Turf Club,
and the spontaneous and generous act
by the committee of the Brisbane Ama
teur Turf Club, made it possible for the
Queensland Turf Club to provide two
days' racing in Brisbane next week--
Thursday and Saturday. The meeting
Is in lieu of the Australia Day fixture
of the Q.T.C.. which was postponed on
account of the death of the King, and
eventually cancelled owing to the date
conflicting with the Racing Act regula
tions.
A special meeting of the committee
of the Q.T.C. was held to-day to de
cide what measures to adopt, but no
thing could be done. The chairman
(Mr. P. G. O'Shea) was in a dilemma
until to-night, when Mr. T. Ahern
(chairman of the B.A.T.C.) , on behalf
of the committee of his club, offered
the premier club the date for February
1.
The programme for the two days will
be similar to the Australia Day pro
gramme. Mr. R. Sloane, secretary of
the Q.T.C., stated to-night that all
nomination fees for the Australia Day
meeting would be refunded.
Q.T.C. CRITICISED
Mr. O. Lacy, secretary of the Incapa
citated and Wounded Sailors and Sol
diers' Association of Queensland, stated
to-night that the Association strongly
protests against the action of the Bris
bane Amateur Turf Club in conducting
a race meeting immediately following
the receipt of the news of the King's
death.
Mr. Lacy said that many members
of the Association had strongly com
mented on this act, and the Associa
tion took a very serious view of the
attitude of the B.A.T.C. in holding the
meeting on Wednesday. The action of
the B.A.T.C. in holding their meeting
on Wednesday will be discussed at the
meeting of the Association to-morrow
night.
Following criticism of the action of
the B.A.T.C. in holding a meeting on
Wednesday, the chairman of the club
(Mr. T. Ahern), at a meeting of the
committee to-night, pointed out that
before it was decided to go on with
the meeting the powers that be were
communicated with, and the Govern
ment proclamation was that only Gov
ernment offices would be closed on
Wednesday, while other business would
continue as usual. The club, therefore,
decided to hold the meeting and the
committee kept faith with the public,
being of the opinion that it was the
correct thing.
