Mr. James R. Collins, secretary of the
Commonwealth Treasury, will leave Eng
laind for Melbourne in the steamer Oster

Dame Nellie lMelba will leave England
in the White Star liner Megantic on June
4 for New York, en route to Australia.
Mr. J. Thomson, 3Lb.A. (Mayor of
Claremont1, has returned from a visit to
the piastern-States. While in 31elbourae
he visited Mr. R. P. Vincent, a former
Mayor of Perth, whose health has been
so seriously impaired as to ndcessitate
his removal to a private hospital, where
he is at present undergoing treatment
ir. H. J. Preston, who is well known
in business circles throughout Australia
was recently presented by the .Serbian
'ed Cross Society with the Distinction
Cross, in grateful recognition of uervic2s
which he was able to render Serbia
during the war'in his capacity as Honor
ary Red Cross Commissioner. Mr. Pres
ton is also the holder of the 1914-15 Star
for services in Frknoe in 1915.

day. when. a presentation was made to
him and the opportunity taken to wise
him bon voyage on thee eve of his depar
ture for England. When making the pre-
sentation. Lieutenant-Colcanel 'ilney,

Repatriation, paid a tribute to the wore
which had .been performed by Mr. Garner
on behalf of returned soldiers during the
war period, both on the War Council and
the Repatriation Board, and wished him
a pleasant and successfl voyage, his re
marks being supported by Messrs A. A. J
Mc?Neil, late Deputy Chairman, A. Mc
Cellum, L.L.A. and A. G. Wright, and
Lieutenantb-Clonel Pope, C.B. The brief
proceedings were under the .dhairmanship
of Mr. E. S. ILazarus O.B-E., dhairman or
the present State Board, and Mr H. Bol
ton, "returned soldiers' representative on
the new board, was also present

a member of the Royal Commission ap
pointed to inquire upon the incidence of
Coummonwealth taxation, has been ac
cepted.
A Melbourne telegram states that the
appointments" of Captain D. J. Rogers as
a member of the Central War Gratuity
.,oard, and Captain A. Loghlin as a mem
ber of the Subordinate War Grat~ity Board
have been terminated. Lieutenapit J.
Thwaites has beep appointed as a member
of the Central Board, at a salary of £700
a year.
Appointments to the Board of Trade have
been made as follows:-Sydney section,
Sir Henry Y. Bradden, K.B.E; Melbourne
section, Mr G. H. Inibbs, (LM.G.
Mr. Girdon Taylor, M.A., lecturer in
Pconomies and History at Trinity, Mel
bourne University, has passed his third
year laws .with honours, and has carried
off the Harbison-Higinbotham Schola?ahip,
valued at £100.
The polling in connection with the by
election for the Melbourne Province seat
in the Victorian Legislative Council took
place yesterday .and resulted in the re
tirr of the Nationalist candidate, thA
foares being: Mr. H. I. Cohen, K.C.
(Nationalist), 4,567 votes; and Mr. J. D.
Pcarson (Labourite), 2293 votes.
At the Palace Hotel, Perth, on Tuesday,
5th insfant, the members of the commit
tee of the Perth Chamber of Commerce
met Mr. Garner (of Messrs. F. H. Fand
ing and Co.), who is leaving for London by
the s.s. Morea, to:wish him ban voyage and
a pleasant holiday. The chair was coon
pied by the president of the chamber (Mr.
H. S. Bickford), who in a happy speech
alluded to the many sterling qualities of
their guest, who entered enthusiastically
into everything he took up. and had been
of inestimable value to the chamber.
Messrs. L. Alexander, H. E. Martin, PB
Russell, and R. A. Cameron endorsed the
chairman s remarks, after which Mr. Gar
ner thanked the members for the kind
things they had said about him. He had
been associated with the chambetr ever since
he came to the State some 12 years ago,
and had taken an active interest in the
committee work, and was at all times
willing to do all he could for the chamber.
While away it was his intention to study
methods adopted in France, Belgium,. and
elsewhere dealing with repatriated soldiers,
to see if our present t ystem could be im
proved. He would not forget the oppor
tunities that Western Australia offered to
men with some capital, who were not
afraid of work, and on his return his ser
vices would be available for the chamber
if required. Advantage was taken of the
meeting to say good-bye to Mr. Winm.
