SERIOUS POSITION AVERTED.
Melbourne, June 14.
A cessation of operations at the Spots
wood pumping station, on which the sewer
age system of the metropolitan area de
pends, was threatened by the engine
drivers on Sunday morning, but was avert
ed by a conferene between the employees
representatives and the Board of 'Works
And the Disputes. Committee. 1! was ulti
mately agreed by the board that ii, would
accede to the men's demands for an in
crease of 4s. per day. After the eonfe
rence the chairmn of the Board of Works
said: "If the Board of Works had been
in a similar position to the gas companies
or electricity authorities it is probable that
a majority of the Connnmissioners would
have declined to grant the iterms of the
Trades Hall Council. The gravity of the
situation and the serious risk incurred to
the public health, however,. have com
pelled us relac?ntly to. accept the pro
posals on behalf of the men."
