BROKEN HILL MIES.
REASON FOR WITHHOLDLNG DIVI
DENDS.
Melbourne, MAy 9.
At a meeting of the board of directors
of the Broken Hill South Ltd. to-day' a
quarterly dividend would in the ordinimy
course have been declared. In view, ho't
ever, of the fact that the Associated Smel
ters Company has since the expiry of the
munition lead sale contract on March 31
been able to dispose of only a small' por
tion of its lead production, advance pay
ments an lead concentrates to the Broken
Hill companies have for the preseat been
discontinued. It is the policy of the Bro
ken Hill South Ltd. to conserve its flnam
cial resources in order to maintain pro
ductive operations. It is also stated ror
the information of shareholders that the
company has just received a claim for the
year 1916-17 under the Wartime Profits Tax
Assessment Act for a sum approximating
£107,000. The board has therefore decided
with regret that the June dividend will not
be paid and that the resumption of divi
dend payments must be necessarily depen
dent on the future lead realisation position.
The board of the North Broken Hill Ltd.
has decided to take similar action.
