LONDON DOCKS
STRIKE HOLDS UP
FOOD SHIPS a
LONDON, Thursday.
A tally clerks' strike to-day
help up the unloading of four
cargo ships loaded with foodstuffs
from Australia and New
Zealand.
The cargoes contained meat,
butter and other foodstuffs;
About 100 tally clerks have
now gone on strike. More
than 400 dock labourers
who are not concerned in the dispute,
are idle on the quayside,
as they cannot work without the
tally clerks.
The strike started at the King
George V dock this morning on
the Dominion Monarch, where 30
tally clerks struck in protest at
the employment of one tally
clerk who does not belong to one
of the "recognised" unions.
Clerks on three other ship's;
Arawa, Largs Bay and Australia
Star, joined the strike during the
morning, and a mass meeting
was called for later to-day.
This meeting will decide if any
further action will be taken.
It is understood the trouble
spread when the London Dock
Labour Board recruited a small
number of additional tally clerks.
