Diver. Uses
Hammer To
Hit Shark
MAGKAY, Saturday. —
Brisbane diver, Neil Tod-
kill hit a shark on the
head with a hammer
when it swam around him
while ; he was plugging
holes on the disabled
British freighter Palana
this week.
The Palana's master (Capt.
Spurr) stood on guard with a
rifle, while ;Todkill finished his
work on the ship, which was
badly, holed, whep she hit a reef
at Pine Peak Island, 60 miles
south-east of Mackay, on Janu
ary 3.
The 11,000-ton freighter is at
anchor off Mackay Harbor,
with 700 tons of water in her
holds. .
Three : tugs . towed her from
Fine Peak Island in 15
hours.
The Palana will be grounded
in Mackay Harbor for tempor
ary repairs; after which she
will be towed to Brisbane for a
thorough overhaul.
Food Rationed
Since the ship ran aground,
each member of tne skeleton
:crew which remained on board
has been rationed to one' egg
daily, tinned foods qnd biscuits.
Before- Brisbane carpenters
rigged up a galley on the deck,
with a stove made of oil drums
to burn dunnage wood from the
holds, the ship had only two
primus stoves to . cook for 30 or
40 men. -
