EDrA MAY DEEP LEVE?
The water difUiclty. wuhich ham serou t
afflicted the mining companies opeatig
at Weatonia, was uccessfully overoome in
the case of the Edna May Deep Levels by
the application of the eementation proems;
the invention of the mine manager, Mr. N.
S. Stuckey. By many it was believed that
this mine would never be succossfu:y oCab
ed up without a pumping installation of
great capacity. but the unexpected was eo
cmnpished, and as a result, the Weonies
field cos?ains what threatened to be m
heavily watered mine developed by a me
thod not previoniy practised in A rhmian
mining. The property is so peculiarly situ
ated m its relation to the Edna May that
its firs level on the Edna May lode (known
as No. 3 level) is driven at a depth of 480
feet from the surface. Now that operatins
are in progress at a depth of 700ft. a se
cond opening to the surface has been deem
ed advisable, and this is being provided as
expeditiiody as possble. Needlees to sate
the execution of this work is proving some
what of a drain on the company's cueant
profits. The masuger intends tpening up
the 766ft. !evel by means of winces, and an
underlie shaft sunk from the f66ft. level.
and when the ore above the former lead
is available to stopsg, the company w>i7 be
in an improved asiion as regxrds ore m
serves. An ore breaker is being added to
the surface equipmednt, and when this is in
conmission, an increased monthly onIpoi
may be looked for. At present the conm
pany is subjeot to cosideable expenditan~
under development and plant aconjs.
Probably a substantial redontion of soul
expenditure will. syndironise with an;.in
creased output, and, in that event, the
company should again have pve
available for distribution to shaeoldeas. ;

solidated shaft from tho 100ft. lera- to

ary minng and treatmnent operations re
sumed. This company is fortunate in Iev
ing three lodes to draw upon, for as stop
ing may be conducted on each over a sub
stantial width, the matter of providing a
oontinuous supply of ore for the battery is
a comparatively simple one. At the some

which will be treated in.due ares.
