ARCHBISHOP MANNIX.
OPPOSES CONSCRIPTION.
Melbourne. Nov. 11
Speaking in North Brunswick on Satur-
day, Archbishop Mannix said that on the
conscription issue the people were asked
to put the Empire first and Australia se-
cond. He would ask them to put Austra-
lia first and the Empire second. He
hoped that conscription would be rejected
as before. He was perfectly sensible of
the fact that if Australia was to be kept
free from conscription and military slavery
no stone should be left unturned. (Ap-
plause.) No doubt it would be said that
the whole situation had been changed
within the last few days, and the Italian
reverse would be emphasised. Australia
had done its share already, and its soldiers
had covered themselves with glory. He con
ceived it to be his duty to oppose con
scription. If he felt sure that conscription
would be carried to-morrow he would still
raise his voice against it.
Speaking in Windsor this afternoon,
Archbishop Mannix remarked that he was
not at all sure that the conscription issue
was to be put before the people with the
full and free consent of the Prime Minister.
At any rate two members of the Ministry,
by their recent public utterances, had
shown that they were not desirous of hav
ing the question put to the people at pre
sent. Members of the Ministry were di
vided among themselves, but their hands
had been forced by outside influences.
