- :WRONR'S INQUIRY.
S.The adjourned: inquiry concerning the
death of Corporal James Patrick. Daly, a
returned: soldier.,l. years of- age, whose
body wasa.-picked up froin under the.?cow:
catcher of an engine at the Perth Central
Railway Station early on-the morning of
October 10, was -ontinned yesterday before
Mr. T. F. Davies, P.M., Coroner, and jury.
Sergeant Leen conducted the inquiry.
" Evidence was given to the effect that on
the afternoon of October 9 deceased and, a
friendnamed W. Burton went to Fremantle
naud returned to Perth about 7.45 p.m..They
met two soldier. friends-of Daly's on their
return and.?ent to three hotels, but the de
ceased; said Burton, only had two temper
ance drinks. Burton, Corporal Marshall
(azleturned soldier), and Daly had-supper
at a cafe in Barraek-street, and about 10.30
p.m. deceased left Burton at the corner of
Barrack and Wellington streets, saying that
he was going to catch a train to go home.
That was the last time Burton saw him.
Evidence was given that deeased was of a
very cheerful' disposition and displayed no
suicidaLtendencies.. The attestation papers
of Daly showed that he was suffering from
quickened action of the -heart, and it was
stated that when he was walking from
Bellevue to Blackboy he often bad to rest
on the way. An enginedriver, who was
in charge of a mired train stated that when
he was-about to pull, up at No. 6 platform
about 1.5 a.m. on October 10 he heard a
crudlng noise as of ballast being, on.the
rails.. When the train was stopped the.
body of thedeceased- was found under the
coweratcher,, and it appeared - to have been
dragged about 30 feet- The body, accord
ing to `Dr..:Barker, Acting Chief Resident

tal,- who made the postmortem examination,.
'as badl mangled; d death was due to
these nureq- There was a strong smell of
alcohol from the -body indicating that a
fair amount of liquor had been consumed.
At this stage, on the application of Ser
geant Leen, the.inquiry was adjourned, to
Monday, November' 5a 2.30 p.m., to allow
tie widoir a? the deceased to attend to give
evidence.
