A Valueless ?heque--Herbert Hugh
Slater -admitted having obtained £3 fiom
Arthur John Tunney by moans of a value
I Ices cheque. Mr. 'unney, -licensee of the
IBohemia Hotel, M3uray-strwet, said that
I Mater went to the hotel on June 13 and
asked to be booked up. He wished wit
acss to cash a cheque for him, and when
witness. asked wiether he was "cne of the
oriinal ilstir family" he replied in the
allir?etive. On this representation witness
agreed to cash g* cheque, and accused made
out one for £3 on t~e Union Bank, Gee
malling. Witness gave him £2 19j 6d.
The cheque was dishonoured, accused hav
ing no account at the bank in question.
It was the third occasion on which Slater
had faced the Bench for this class of
offence. A sentence of three months' hard
labour was imposed.
A Bench Warrant Is-sued-Will?m Quinn
fi-red on the caarge list as defendant .on
a complaint of having assalted George
Mot?. He did rot appear when the case
was called on, and aMr. M. G. Lavan, rop's
senting the complainant, expressed the
opinion that be had left the Stete by
Saturday's boat. On counsel's aprplicstion
a Bench warrant was issued for Quinn's
arrest.
A End Character.-Bcssie Preston was
sentenced to six months' hard olabour on a
charge of vagrancy. According to Detee

several thefts in which the accused was
alleged to have offended. Detective Cowie

"drunks" in the viainity of hotels.
Remanded for Medical Observation-
Michael Hayes, charged with having stolen
one bicycle and been in' the unlaiwful pas
session of another, was remanded for medi
cal abservefion, there being some doubt as
to .his mental eoundncss.
Alleged Defamation.-W--ilniam Dram.
nlor. was ciarged with having, at the Club
H-otel, Brookton, on June 5. spoken and
published the folloning false defamatory
matter concerning Henry Brandreth, of the
hotel in question :-"I know the mob you
are mixed up with (meaning C. F. Mourit-
zen, employer of Brandreth). They are a
dirty. - German crowd. Your name is
not British. You are German right enough.
That's why yon got knocked out of the
militarv after loafing on the country for
ten months. What influence had you to be
kept there as a sergeant-major. whilst
others had to go end fight for this dirty
GCrman crowd?" -The case was adjourned
for . week.
