INDONESIAN RAID
ON DUTCH
NEW GUINEA
T»HE HAGUE (A.A.P.). - Holland has made
a strong protest to Indonesia over "re-
newed violation of Dutch territory" through
an alleged Indonesian landing on Dutch New
Guinea last month.
The protest,, lodged in Dja-l
karta last Saturday, demanded
the release of a police officer
alleged to have been abducted.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry
statement gave further details
of the "armed Indonesian in-
filtration" of Dutch New
Guinea.
On October 21, it said, two
Indonesian boats appeared in
Etna Bay of south-West New
Guinea, from which 48 men
disembarked.
.
"They molested ' a native
village, and looted a Chinese
store before advancing
further" the statement
claimed.
During the landing a police
officer named Van Krieken was
captured, and "probably" taken
awav in a boat returning to
Dobo, the statement further
alleged.
The local population imme-
diately reported the incident.
Dutch marines and police set
out in pursuit, and exchanged
fire with the intruders on No-
vember 1 and 2, The Hague
statement continued.
The infiltrators then fled
in various directions leaving
behind munitions, documents
and food.
These documents showed that
the "gang" left the island of
Dobo on October 18, and "at
least some of its members be-
longed to the 25th Infantry
Regiment of the Indonesian
Army stationed in the Indo-
nesian Aru Islands," it further
claimed.
The statement alleged that
photographs and maps left be-
hind by the intruders, and also
their tactics, indicated that the
infiltration attempt was well
planned.
In a later clash several of
the gang were brought down,
while many of the others
surrendered with arms and
ammunition, it stated.
The rest were still being pur-
sued with the full co-operation
of the local population.
