IN N.S.W. RACE
CYPNEY, Sun. - The Hobart professional
cyclist Rex Welsh yesterday finished third
: in the Sj'dney-Goulburn. race, won in record
! time by Eddie Smith (V.),
Off 30 minutes, Welsh won
the sealed handicap.
Smith defeated John Beasley
(V.) by eight yards ln.ßh. Om.
9s. for the 128 miles after fin-
ishing well ahead of the next
group.
The previous ' record was
Roger Arnold's 6h. 2m.. set last
year.
Only 29 of the field of 100
amateurs and professionals
finished the gruelling race.
During the race Hec Suther-
land (V.) was disqualified for
receiving outside help.
Sutherland allegedly was
given food by his trainer (W.
L. Morgan) near Marulan, 17
miles from Goulburn, and was

i Morgan, manager oí Smith,
Sutherland, and Arnold, has
been warned that they will be
disqualified if there is any evi-
dence of their teaming during
the Sydney-Melbourne seven
day race which starts tomorrow
morning.
A special meetings of the New
South Wales and Victorian
Leagues of Wheelmen today
threatened "instant disqualifica-
tion" for any rider suspected of
teaming.
"We are determined that
it will be an individual bike
race, and the best rider will
win," it was announced.
Smith, following his victory
yesterday-his 10th for the sea-
