MAGNETIC POLE
REACHED
Australian Associated Press
ÇJYDNEY (Nova Scotia), Sun. - Amateur mar
iners who returned from the Arctic yesterday
claimed that they were the first to reach the Mag
r netic North Pole.
One of the crew of 10 -the
Rev. D. Linehan, director of
the Weston Observatory at
Weston, Massachusetts - said
he had records to prove their
claim.
Mr. Linehan said the Pole
a region where the magnetic
force is vertically downward -
was suspected to be on the west
central part of Prince of Wales
Island in Canada's northland.
Nobody had ever got there -
it had been measured at a "dis-
tance.
The island is about 1,100
miles south of the true Pole.
But Mr. Linehan said the
Pole's actual location was
about 200 miles northward.
Mr. Linehan and his party
made their exploration in a 78
ft. fishing schooner, tihe Monte
Carlo. It sailed into port here
on Friday almost two. months
after leaving Boston on the
Arctic trip.
