MIGRATION
PLAN TO
OPEN SOON
CANBERRA, Saturday. — The
Acting Prime Minister (Mr.
Forde), last night indicated that
Australia's migration p r o-
gramme would he resumed as
soon as possible and would not
wait until the end of the war
or until the demobilisation of
Australian servicemen and
women was completed.
A/FR. FORDE said that many British
' servicemen who were based on or
near Australia
would wish to be
demobilised here.
If they mea
sured up to Aus
tralian standards
they would be
welcomed as mi
grants.
Mr. Forde said
it was not the in
tention of the
Govern ment to
delay its plans to
such ah extent
that Australia
lost desirable mi
grants.
"Investigation will be made as to
the opportunities for absorbing and
accommodating new settlers, and
migration of suitable types will be
encouraged as soon as transport be
comes available," he said.
"The introduction of selected child
migrants from the United Kingdom
and Europe will be a special phase ot
the Commonwealth's scheme."
