Jazz-Mart As
Band Chief

LONDON. — The appointment
of Stanley Black as the new
B.B.C. Dance-and-variety Or
chestra conductor, is considered
good news by discriminating
dance listeners.
"TIE is a real Jazz-man, as against
-"-a. mere dance-band leader," they
say. ;
Stanley Black, dark, wiry -haired,
slight and keen, is young, at 30, for a
B.B.C. conductor, but has all the ex
perience that goes to make a lively
influence.
He has been playing the piano
since he was seven, started out in
commercial playing at 17.
Since then he has teamed with
Hutch, Howard Jacobs, Maurice Win-
nick, Lew Stone, and made records
with the famous American band-
leader, Coleman Hawkins (tenor
saxophonist), when Hawkins was over
here in '34.
He has also "arranged" numbers
, for Harry Roy, Ambrose, Geraldo,
Eric Winstone.

At the outbreak of war Black en
listed in the Air Force, but was dis
charged on medical grounds after 10
months' service.
' His own compositions include the
numbers, "Sales Talk," "One Foot in
, the Gutter," "Hacienda in Havana."
