UNITED NATIONS APPROVE
U.S. ATOM EXPERIMENTS
IN MARSHALL ISLANDS
Australian Associated Press
NEW YORK, Fri.-The United Nations Trusteeship Council yesterday approved
a three-Power resolution recommending that the U.S. continue its nuclear
experiments in the Marshall Islands.
The resolution, sponsored by
Britain, Prance, and Belgium,
was one of three proposals sub-
mitted to the council following
a petition from, the Marshall
Islanders protesting against the
effect of recent hydrogen bomb
tests in the Pacific.
All three proposals were re-
jected when they came before
the Petitions Committee earlier
this week.
The three-Power proposal
also asked the U.S., as the
administering: authority, to
take such precautions "as
will ensure that no inhabi-
tants of the territory are
again endangered, including
those precautionary measures
requested by the petitioners."
The resolution also urged
that prompt and sympathetic
action be given to all claims
for damages submitted by the
inhabitants concerned.
Voting against the three
Power resolution were India,
the Soviet Union, and Syria.
A proposal submitted -by the
Soviet Union asked the Trus-
teeship Council to call for dis-
continuance of all experiments
lin the Pacific Islands.
L The third proposal, sub
> mltted by India, asked the
. General Assembly to seek an
advisory opinion from the
? International Court of Jus
! tice on the legality of using -
. the territory for tests.
Mr. William Forsyth, the
Australian delegate, said his
delegation would support the
three-Power resolution.
The Soviet resolution. Mr.
Forsyth said, was merely an at-
tempt to exploit the trusteeship
system for purposes of the
Soviet Union known'to all the
world.
