AUSTRALIAN GIRL
AS T.V. YANK
Australian Associated Press
T ONDON, Fri. - Betty McDowall, 25-year
^ old Australian actress, has been selected
to play the role of an American girl in "Pat-
tern For Glory," a new American television
film being made in England.
<. But she got the job only
after a recurrence of the argu-
ment about whether "A Yank
speaks like an Aussie."
At first, Miss MoDowall was
told by the film company that
an Australian could not be a
convincing American,
? Miss McDowall was very sur-
prised, because she had often
been told by the B.B.C. that it
was only as an American that
an Australian girl could be con-
vincing.
In eight of her television
plays for the B.B.C. she has
been cast as a Canadian. or
American.
After seeing Miss McDowall
as an American girl in the
British television play "Queen's
Polly,", the film company ad-
mitted its mistake and gave
her a leading role with Anne
Crawford and Ron Randall,
also an Australian.
The television reporter of the
"Evening Standard" says: "All
this is the more curious because
Miss McDowall speaks impec-
cable English - without any
accent."
