Admiral Denfield declared that
Manus Island was too far south to
be of defence value to the United
States and, therefore, the United
States had no direct interest in it.
He confirmed that he had discussed
the matter with the Australian
authorities during a visit to Canberra
and had been told that the
Commonwealth favoured a joint!
jiiidLiaiian-American maintenance.
Admiral Denfield indicated that
the United States was not interested
in such a scheme.
He did not say whether there were
any arrangements for the removal of
American installations nor did he explain
whether he had made any
specific arrangements with Australia
for the island's use as a base in the
event of an emergency.
He told reporters he had discussed
in general terms the defence of
the South-West Pacific while in Canberra,
but no specific plans were
drawn up. '
