ATTEMPT TO KILL HEYDRICH
(Daily Mirror World Cabin \
LONDON, Saturday —While Reinhard Heydrich, the "Nazi
Hangman of Czechoslovakia, is overing between life and death,
3"d„,s. dea,h has been rumored in Swiss messages,
dreadful vengeance is being taken aaainst innocent CWI.
the first batch of whom already have been executed.
Twelve vie timst including five women and a bov off if vjue»t>e»
a Nazi firing squad at the town of Broun y ester
day as a reprisal for the attempted assassination . The charae
against them was "hiding elements hostile to Germany." '
pOLICE GENERAL VON LUGER
has been appointed Heydrich's
successor, and is showing utter ruth
lessness in his earch for the "But
cher"' attackers.
"An act of bestiality unique in
history," was how the Czechoslova-
kian Acting Foreign Minister (Dr.
Hubert Nisca) described the Nazi
atrocities in a special message to the
Czech people, broadcast through the
BJ3.C. last night.
"In the attack on the life of the
Monster ' Heydrich, the Czechoslo-
vakian people are punishing not only
his crimes committed against Czecho
slovak victims, but, also against the
victims of all other "enslaved nations
m Europe," Dr. Nisca said.
200 Czech Hostages
. Already about 200 Czechs from
various . parts of the country have
keen detained as hostages. They in
clude women, several professors from
the Prague University, and leading
citizens.
The Prague radio announced the
execution of the first six victims,
who comprised two families.
A reward of £05,000 has been
offered by the Germans for in-
irm?tl0n leadhig to the capture of
7? . 0 men responsible for the
attack on Heydrich and the blood
bath is expected to be continued
until they are arrested.
Dr. Nisca's message to the Czech
P<;0Ple was a proclamation made by
the Czechoslovakian Cabinet which
held a special meeting in London
yesterday to discuss the latest dra-
matic events in the protectorate.
"Wickedness of Germans"
"Our sorely tried but unbroken
people are answering the fury of the
German oppressors more and more
strongly, said the proclamation,
which drew the attention of the Al
lied Governments to the "wickedness
of the Germans led by Hitler and re
sponsible for him."
It stated that the Nazis were pro
voking just retribution in accord
ance with the commands of the
Czech Government and exemplified
by the attack on' Heydrich. .
Messages from Switzerland and
Sweden say that at noon yesterday
Heydrich's condition was still very
serious, and he was hovering be
tween life and death.
Bullets In Spine
Hitler's personal surgeon is said to
have extracted three bullets from his
spine, and he has had a blood
transfusion.
The Daily Mirror's Washington
correspondent says that Dorothy
Thompson, noted woman columnist,
in her weekly broadcast to the nation
last night, suggested that Heydrich
was wounded not by the hand of a
Czech, but by the German Secret
Police.
"It's a well-known Nazi device—
when you want a reign of terror, to
create an incident," Miss Thompson
said.
"The mortality rate of high Nazi
officials is too high to be normal,"
she added.
She said that in her view the re
cent demand by Hitler for new pow
ers of chastisement, followed by
Goering's pessimistic speech to Ger
man workers, and the dismissal of
Walter Dame, German Agriculture
Minister, were in some mysterious
way connected in a chain of events,
of which the Heydrich affair was
merely the latest.
