OLD-TIME SEA-DOG TURNS SOLDIER

LONDON, Monday. — The Italians claim the capture of 71 -year-old Admiral Sir Walter
Cowan who emerged from the retired list to take ah active part in this war.

ir. .Navy in 1884 at the same time
that Lord Beatty joined it. ine
British fleet still included a num
ber of sailing ships.
Saying that he wanted to die on
the battlefield and not in bed, he got-
a military job at Tobruk, and re-
turned to Africa, where he first saw
service in 1895.
Sir Walter used to be known in
the Navy as "Tich." He was so small
of stature that he was unable to have,
a handkerchief on his monkey-
jacket.
During the Boer War he was AX».C.
to Lord Kitchener and naval AJ>.C.
to Lord Roberts.
He commanded a light cruiser
squadron in 1917, and the previous
year took part in the Battle of Jut
land.
He was placed on the retired list
in 1931. v
