TUMUT ROAD TO
CANBERRA
Progress League Seeks
Co-operation
The Tumut Tourist and Progress
League has approached the Canberra
Chamber of Commerce for support in
the Tumut-Canberra road project.
Agitation for the road commenced
in 1927, following a survey by the
Main Roads Department, and con-
tinued sporadically until 1943.
A pamphlet, accompanying the let-
ter, emphasises the advantages of
such a road to Canberra residents.
It mentions that between 50 and 60
million super feet of hardwood might
be opened up as well as being the
source of fresh vegetables and fruit
for A.C.T. markets.
It is claimed the road would offer
attractions to tourists in scenery and
sporting activities.
The Tumut Progress League be-
lieve the road would cost less than
the original estimate of £324,000 by
using modern road-making equip-
ment.
The route will be 78 miles long
with the steepest gradient 1 in 22.
The overall plan by Tumut envis-
ages another direct road development
project between Adelong and Little
Billabong to complete the direct
route to Melbourne.
