IN CRUSH AT
EVA PERONS BIER
Australian Associated Press
DUEÑOS AIRES, Tues.-Eight people
were killed, and hundreds injured, in
the crush yesterday at the bier of Señora
Eva Peron. Troops were called out to
control the crowd.
Hundreds of thousands of
Argentinians surged around the
Ministry of Labour, where the
glass-topped casket containing
the body of the wife of Presi-
dent Peron lay in state.
Many of the injured suffer-
ed nervous collapse and some
had broken legs or arms.
As the troops moved in to
help the harried police, the
crowds stretched out more pati-
ently into mile-long queues to
file slowly past the orchid
blanketed bier.
President's Vigil
President Peron and high
Government officials took half
hour watches over the casket.
The grief of the Argentine
people has postponed the
funeral services.
The President announced last
, night that his wife's body would
continue to lie in state in an
1 Improvised chapel in the
Labour Ministry until the wait-
ing throng© had paid their last
respects.
President Peron said the body
would lie in state for a full day
in the National Congress build-
ing.' Then it would be moved
for burial in the hall of the
General Labour Confederation,
whose 6,000,000 mem'bers were
Señora Peron's most devoffed
supporters.
No official announcement has
been made of the new funeral
date, but the rites apparently
will not 'be held before to-
morrow at the earliest.
Congress held a special session
yesterday to approve measures
of mourning, and perpetual
homage to the woman who had
helped her husband to power.
The House of Deputies
declared July 26-the day of
Señora Peron's death-a day
of national mourning each
year. AU members will wear
black ties at all sessions for
'the rest of this year, and will
observe a minute's silence at
every meeting'.
They will set up a commis-
sion to send flowers each week
to a mausoleum to be built
later for the permanent burial
of the President's wife.
The Government has ordered
a 30-day period of mourning,
and all mem'bers of the Presi-
dent's Peronista Party have
been ordered to wear black ties
at party functions for the rest!
of their lives.
