MELROSE THEATRE.
On Saturday night Melrose Theatre was
again filHed to its' utmet capacity, when
'a liberal and attractive programme was
provided. Five new turns were submitted
by the management for the' approval of
their patrons, and the applause which
attended the individual efforts of the ar
tistes clearly demonstrated the fact that
they met with the hearty approbation of
the audience. The star attraction .of the
current week's programme is undoubtedly
Herbert Brooks, a card manipulator of un
usual dexterity, who features.in his enter
tainment what he terms his "20,000 dollar
trunk mystery." His escape from a steel
trunk, which, to all intents and purposes
appears impossible, is nothing short of-mar
vellous. His ready wit and quick repartee
greatly contribute to his.popularity. Brooks
announced on Saturday night.that he had
received a communication from. the car.
pentema o fthe 'Swan' Brewery, Company,
challenging him to .escape from a wooden
trunmk specially constructed by them. The
test will take place next Thursday night,
and the trunk will be put together in full
view of the audience. Sceptics are invited
to bring along their own nails and drive
them into.the trunk. Should Mr. Brooks
