CONTROL OF RACING.
MEETING AT .YORK.
At York" on Thursday night last there!
was. a meeting of members of the' York
Trotting Club. Mr.' H. J. Jauncey pre
sided in the absence of the president, Mr.
Maurice Edwards. The matter of tbhe pro
posed control of racing and its' effect upon
trotting interests was fully.: discussed.
Among the speakers were Messrs. Inkpen,
Willett, Jordan, and Clairs. The fdllow
ing resolution was carried:-"T'Tat this
meeting of members of the York Trotting
Club enters a strong protest' against any
interference in the provision' of sport by
the West Australian -Trotting Association,
especially in view. of the'facts that its con
duct is approved by a "'majority of race
goers, and that the efforts of the associa
tion to extend .the sport to the country
districts is in the interests of the breeding
of light harness horses."' The. president
and secretaty of the club were appointed
to give' evidence before the Select Com
mittee on the Control of Racing, and to
'thul present the views of the club and its
supporters,; with regard to the encourage
ment that should be-given to-only non-pro:
prietary governing bodies
A NORTH4M MEETING.
On Friday night membert oat the Nor
tham Race Club and the Northam Trotting
Club assembled at the Shainrdck Hotel,
when the matter of the control of racing
was given consideration. Mr. S. F. A. Par
ker, the president of'the Northam Agricul
tural Society, was in the I chair. Among
the speakers were Messrs. Horace Withnell,
A. C. Middleton, W. Smythe, F. C. McKin
nell, I. Oldham, IH. Krachler, T. S. Dunk
ley, and the chairman. All of :them were
condemnatory of proprietary racing,. and
it was strongly urged that its continued
permission was against the interests of the
amateur clubs, and especially those in the
country. The following 'resolutions were
unanimously adopted:--'hat this meeting,
representative of the racing clubs and trot
ting clubs of the eastern districts, em.
phatically affirms that proprietary racing
is undesirable, and that racing in any
form should only be controlled by purely
amateur organisations, such as the West
Australian Turf Club a'nd the West Aus
tralian Trotting Association." "That it
be urged that 'only- racing 'controlled by
non-proprietary clubs be allowed; that
racing dates be curtailed, and that a
round of country meetings be arranged
during which time racing should not' be
allowed in the mitropolitan area." Messrs.
Withnell and Dunkley. who have been ap
pointed to give evidence before the Select
Committee on Horse Racing on behalf of
the Eastern Districts Racing Association
and the Northam Trotting Club respective
ly, pecured the opinions of those present
concerning many phases of the question,
and they were asked to urge the principles
embodied in the resolutions mentioned.
VICTORIA DISTRICT CLUB.
The annual meeting of the Victoria Dis
trict Turf Club was held last week at Ger
aldton, Mr. P. M. Steggall prcsmding. The
committeee in their annual report stated
that three meetings,, covering five days' rac
ing, had been held, and every effort was
made to raise the standard of the sport and
keep it clean. In one notable instance, how
ever, the W.A. Turf Club quite failed to
assist in this direction, for on appeal they
removed a disqalification, but declined to
give the committee their re.'ans though
very herd pressed to do so. Future rac
ing was a matter for serious co ssderation.
A curtailment of meetings y-as the order of
the day, and in some cases clubs had de
cided to suspend racing until after the war.
The year's operations resulted in a net pro
fit of £15 Os. lid., despite the hiavy less of
£49 15is. Sd. on the Easter .-eeting. The
sum of £40 15s. had been spent on improve
ments, and the club's liquid assets were not
sufficient to pay all creditors. Like other
organisations, the club had felt the stress
of the bad t;mes, and the com:nitt.ee, wvthIl
a view of making ends meet, reconmnenide l
that an honorary secretary be appointed
till the financial position improred. Th
reduction in the membership sbscriptoun
had failed to brine in a larer income. the
amount received from this source Feing £122
16s., as compared with £143 17s. for the pre
vious year. Mr. Mackenzie, who had dis
. narged the duties of secretary -ery ener
getically. found he could not spare the
time from I,is private business, and, while
resigning. offered to give his successor every
possible assistance. The report and bal
ance-sheet were adopted. Mr. Fred. Han
sen, who had offered to undertake the
duties, was appointed honorary secretary.
A general discussion took place as to the
future of racing in the district, and the
committee. though feeling it would be ad
visable to curtail the meetings, thought
efforts should be made to keep the sport
alive. It was accordingly decided to aban
don the Cup meeting, but to arrange picnic
meetings from time to time.

went into the ring for Straggler, who was
well backed from sixes to fours. Royal

supported from sevens to fives, but little
money changed hands over Chuttinago, Re
nouncement, or American Bill. -The early
runmning was made by Renouncement. Ettie
Kirk, and Straggler, with Moonyoon and
Royal Precedent close up, the nearest of the
others being Celloist. Royal Precedens

straight when running well. Ettie Kirk

that order. Five furlongs from home
Straggler was showing the way to Moon
