GANDHI INDUCES
CONGRESS NOT
TO ACT HASTILY
NEW DELHI, Wed.
Gandhi prevented a break-
down in the negotiations by
persuading the Congress Work-
ing Party to delay a reply to
the British Mission's proposals,
which would have been a refusal
to accept plans for an interim
government.
A Congress spokesman said that
Gandhi appealed to the committee to
"sleep on it."
The spokesman added that the
Congress Party would be thankful to
accept a honourable compromise but
the Moslem leader (Dr. Jinnah) was
apparently adamant.
Gandhi, after conferring with the
Viceroy (Lord Wavell) said, "We
are exploring every avenue to avoid
a breakdown but, if negotiations do
break down, it is God's will."
The possibility of a breakdown over
the Congress demand for majority
representation in the interim Government
is freely conceded everywhere
