SOCIAL NOTES.
The members of the Northumberland and
Durham Association held their first gather
ing of the new year on Saturday evening,
when a musical evening 'was held in the
Alexandra Cafe, Hay-street. Mr. Jas.
Young (presidept), -occupied- the chair. An
enjoyable programme of vocal and iistru
mental music, readings, and recitations was
contributed -by the following:--Mrs. Mar
low (pianiste), Messrs. Gee. Hill, T. Turn
bull. Miller, "G. B. Brown, J. Harrison, A.
Cockett, and the hon. sec. Votes of thanks.
to the artists and the singing of the Na
tional Anthem terminated a pleasant even
ing. :-.
' The engagement is announced of Mr. Al
bert George Bandy second son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Bandy. G.P.O., Perth, to Miss
O ivw Elsie Langmaid, Adest daughter of
Mr. and Me'. W. Langmaid' Boulder.
The children and staff of the Independent
Order of Oddfellows' Orphans Home, Cot
tesloe, were entertained on Saturday last
at the annual outing provided by many kind
friends and members of the Prince Albert
Lodge, Subiaco. After lunch a start was
made from Perth at 2 p.m. for a cruise on
the river on the launch Mermaid, calling at
various places, and reaching the Old Men's
Home, Claremont, at 5.30, for tea. Mr. and
Mrs. Rust looked after- the wants of tlie
children, who also had a look around the in
stitution. The adult members of the party
partook of tea after the children, and at
7.30 a start was -made for Claremont,. where
the. matron and children. were met by the
general secretary, Bro. B. B. Hoddinott and
riven home, after a most enjoyable day to
both young and old. The brethren of the
Subiaco Lodge desire to thank both. Mrs.
and Mr. Rust -who so kindly did all they
could to make the outing as pleasant as pee
sible; also, the business firms who -kindly
gave toys, etc.
The friends of Mrs. Percy Marchant, who
is at present visiting Hobart, will be inter
ested in the.following paragraph, culled
from a local newspaper of recent date:
"The Mayor (Alderman Crisp) and "Mrs.
Crisp, Captain Evans, M.H.A., and Mrs.
Evans, Mr. Sdott Power, Mrs. Nina Phil
lips, Miss Eva Creese, Mr. Jas. Marsh, and
a number of other ladies - and .gentlemen,
met in the Mayor's court room for the pur
pose of extending a welcome to Mrs. Percy
Marchant on her return-from Western Aus
tralia. The Mayor, in a few words, wel
-comed Mrs. Marchant back and expressed
the hope that her future would be a success
ful one. Captain Evans said that he had
always taken a great interest in the wel.
fare of Tasmanians who went abroad to-up
hold the honour of the State. Mrs. Mar
chant had now returned to Tasmania with
the object of spending a month at home
before proceeding to New South -Wales,
where. she intended to adopt' the operatic
stage as a profession, and he hoped her suc
cess in the future would be great."
