A OHALLENGEI
TO TEE AGENT OR OWNER OF THE
SBEEP SHEARING MACHINE WORKED
BY COMPAES3ED AIR.
Tbe Judges ol the Sheep*heutog ErinWos being
oissatlfied with tbe result of the late trial, owing
to no positive information being afforded to them
as to the amount of eteampower required to drive
each competing machine, and as they experienced
great difficulty in forming an opinion as to the
capacity of the competing machines to stand the
wear ot continuous work, also as to authentic
information as to the cost ot Installation of tbe
machines driven by compressed air, they recom
tr ended that a practical trial ebonld sake place, to
wit, that Mr. Hattin, agent ,f r the machine worked
by compressed air, should, work as many machines
&s possible by the four horsepower engine which he
need at the late Exhibition, and that he should
thear the greatest number ot sheep within a sped,
tied time, fr*"* $t?<m i stiould uss the came «w?p*—«>
and prove what the Wol?tley Shearing Machines
were capable of dolns> lat once consented to this
proposal, and was prepared to enter Into any trial
of a practical nature that the Judges might suggest
Falling this tett, however, they reoommended that
tbe prize be divided. Mr. Martin refused, pre
ferring to refer the matter to the Council ot the
Agricultural Sodetj, of which he and his brother
Alexander are members; and after consultation* In
which they may or may not have taken put (but
from which other competitors were debarred); the
price -was awarded to tae Compressed-air Machine.
I am informed that Professor Warren, tbe chlaf
mechanical Judge, wrote to tbe Council saying that If
the rfffomi Tlf""^T.tff wl of the judges was not attended
to be would withdraw Us award of points altogether,
as be conddend there was not sufficient information
given to enable the judges to determine the real merits
crdtmerltsof the machines. Evidently this
letter has been ignored, and Professor Warren, a high
and reputable authority, slighted.
I have endeavored in Tain to obtain from tbe Agrl
cultural Society redress for what I consider unfair
play, for I emphatically proclaim that the award
made by tbe Council ol the Agricultural Society is
contrary to tbe expressed wishes ot the judges
appointed to decide a question affecting Che Interests
ot the best industry in tbe colony, and Is certainly
misleading to tbe pastoratists.
I now challenge Mr. Martin, or the owner ol the
Compressed-air Sheepshearlnir ?"*'-. to enter for
a practical trial, which shall be a bona-fide test of
the respective <ttyrfty and qualifications of tbe shear
ing machines worked by compressed air and the
V'oUeley Sheepeheaiing Machine. My challenge is
that I lay £1,0110 to Us £800 that I wDI prove on prac.
final trial that tbe aheep-ebearioi machine worked ty.
compressed air. wUch he need at tbe late ahearirg
contest, will not stand the tort of oontinootts ust;
that it iB an expansive method of eheep-shearuicr, Inat.

that Buch-B system cf generating power is dispropor

In favor of the former. I propose that the Warrah
Shtd, with Mr. Gregson's permission, be the eoene ot
the contest, for on this Stkdon have the Compressed
air Machines been tried for (be last two seasons.
When at the termination of the Shearing at W ar
