Great Crowds Wait
In Rain to Greet
Cardinal Gilroy
SYDNEY, Sunday.
Despite drizzling rain, intensifying
to heavy showers, tens of thousands
of people stood in the streets from
the Harbour Bridge to St. Mary's
Basilica to greet Cardinal Gilroy on
the occasion of the liturgical reception
in the cathedral.
Thousands of school children, although
drenched by the rain, joined
with members of Catholic organisations
in the guard of honour through
the city. as
Accompanied ¦; by the Apostolic
Delegate (Dr. Panico), and sheltered
by a canopy, Cardinal Gilroy proceeded
up a red carpet to enter St.
Mary's.
He was heralded by the organ to
the Altar of the Blessed Sacrament,
and the Cardinal's red hat was placed
on the Epistle side of the High Al-
tar.
After the Te Deum, he proceeded
to the dais where he addressed the
gathering. ;-'.
.. It is estimated that 20,000 persons
awaited him outside;. St. Mary's.
"In the present? sickness of the
world," he said, "the only salvation
of mankind is to turn to God."
Cardinal Gilroy emphasised the
kindness with which he had been received
in Rome.';' -j
He said that His Holiness had
asked him to carry home the following
message, "Tell your people that
the Holy Father sends his love and
thanks them for their generosity."'-'
