RECORD FLEET LIKELY TO START IN
R.Y.CT. PENNANT RACES
By "Leeward"
ACOMBINED fleet of about 80 craft is expected tc
take part in the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's
first pennant series for all classes on the Derwent to-
morrow.
rPHIS would constitute a record ior
club racing on the Derwent.
Races will be held for "R," "B,"'
Derwent, 12-sq. metre, first and sec-
ond division cruiser, and cadet
dinghy classes.
In addition to carrying pennant
points and prize money, the principal
event of the day-the "R" class race
-also will be known as the P. C.
Harris memorial race.
The R.Y.CT. is giving a trophy
for the first boat on corrected time
in the race, to commemorate the
late vice-commodore of the club,
Prank Harris.
Mr. Harris for many years was
Associated with Weene and ' later
purchased Vanity, which he owned
at the time of his death.
Erica J, which revealed good light
weather qualities last week in taking
line honours in the Derwent Sailing
Squadron event, is not likely to per-
form so well if the weather is hard.
Her skipper, E. T. Domeney, says
the craft is not yet in proper racing
trim and is still hard on the helm.
Sandra and Norske should be
well up at the finish and it ap-
pears the three eight-metre boats
will fight out line honours.
Vanity, which .showed up to good
advantage in. the light airs last week ¡
and led the fleet at one stage, and
the eventual handicap winner,
Weene, may be the hardest to beat
on time.
, N-inie, which did not show out at
her best. last, week, should do bet-
ter in harder weather and might
also be a danger on handicap.
Standard Higher
Bronzewing should be meeting
with stiff opposition from Mon-
soon and Anitra for line honours
in "B" class but it seems unlikely
she will be beaten across the line.
The limit boat, Elf, did well to
finish only a few minutes behind
the leaders on Saturday to win the
event on time and might be a danger
when handicaps are adjusted.
Wendy,, pennant winner in the
Derwent class last year, again dom-
inated her class last week but had
a tough battle with Sabrina and
Gnome.
The standard seems to be higher
than last season in this class and
the race tomorrow should be a
thriller.
Wendy should take line honours
but may have a difficult time against
last week's scratch boat, Gnome.
