Subsidy Sought
On Firewood
At Queenstown
The Queenstown Council has de-
cided to seek a Government subsidy
on. firewood.
A report from the Scenic Boaid on
the firewood available to Queens-
town was tabled at the council
meeting on Thursday night.
There was a three to four years
supply of wood available from one
to two chains from the roads but
equipment was necessary to enable
its recovery.
"The position is serious." Cr. Bart-
ram said. "Some people cannot
secure wood but if it is in our power
I think we should strive to make it
available.
"I think we should ask the Gov-
ernment to consider subsidising cut-
ters by supplying chutes, aerials, or
other equipment."
Cr. G. Hudepeth stated that it
would be necessary to police the
scheme-possibly by a subsidy based
on the amount of wood cut by indi-
vidual cutters. This would assure
assistance to genuine workers.
