EMU BAY RAIL MEN
TO CEASE WORK
pOR the first time in its history the Emu Bay railway service
will be disrupted by an industrial dispute if employees
cease work today.
A LARGE section of employees
- have decided not to report for
work this morning, which means the
goods train services to the West
Coast will be dislocated.
Among the men's claims are six
months' long service leave on full
pay, better lighting service in the
Burnie goods yard, and better light-
ing in guard's vans.
The company claims it is impos-
sible to grant the request for long
service.
The manager of the company (Mr
P. McCormick) estimated last night
that the granting of the men's re
auest would involve a sum of more
than £10,000, and if granted, the
company would have to extend the
same terms to all union men in its
employ.
The president of the Hobart
branch of the Waterside Workers'
Federation (Mr J. Lonergan) said on !
Saturday a stopwork meeting was
to be held today at 9 am.
The federation, some time ago,
had requested the port committee
to set aside a day for a stopwork
meeting to give members an oppor-
tunity to discuss routine business,
and Monday had been granted.
As there was little shipping In
port no undue inconvenience
would be caused.
Compensation payment questions
had been among the routine matters
set down on the agenda for discus-
sion.
Unloading Held Up
Work on the vessel Dandenong,
at present in Launceston, was sus-
pended on Friday night after a
donkeyman had refused to pro-
vide steam for the winches.
The donkeyman refused co work
without the assistance of a fireman.
An official of the local agents said
yesterday that donkeymen on ves-
sels of less than 3,000 tons were not
entitled to the services of a fireman.
The agents, Australian United
Steam Navigation Co. and the Aus-
tralian Shipping Bo., have been
notified of the dispute.
The Dandenong has a cargo of
general merchandise from Sydney
and Newcastle.
