STRIKE.
DEFECTION OF FREE LABORMERS.
NEARLY EIGHTY JOIN STRIKERS.
Brisbane, Aug. 3.
. By the steamer Wyreema 80 men arrived
at Townsville for work in the sugar planta
tions. The majority were young 'men,
mostly from Melbourne. To avoid trouble
with the unionists the steamer Palmei was
chartered to pick the men up in the Bay
and convey them to their destination, hut on
the arrival of the' Palmer only eight men
went aboard. The others held a meeting cn
the Wyreema and refused to trauship, say
ing that they would go by the Wyreema to
Cairns. The few who had transhipped re
turned to the Wyreema. In the afternoon
a meeting was held at the entrance to the
jetty, at which the majority of the new
comers attended. On a vote being'taken
nearly all decided to join the strikers.
