THE REFERENDA.
CONTINUATION OF THE COUNT.
PRONOUNCED GOVERNMENT
DEFEAT.
LARGE "NO" MAJORITIES IN
FIVE STATES.
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FIGURES.
VIEWS OF PARLIAMENTARY
LEADERS.
With the knowledge that to all intents and
purposes the battle of the Referenda was
over interest was chiefly centred yesterday
iln ascertaining by how many the
"No" arniy had .out-numbered its op
ponetsa. The additional returns that came
to hand during the day showed that there
was an ever-growing; majority against the
proposals in- five of the States of the
Commonwealth. These were the Eastern
States. On both referenda proposals' these
five" tates pronounced most emphati
cally against the unification policy of the
Federal Government, there being a major
ity bf 242,512 voting "No" in the case of the
legislative powers referendum and a ma
jority of 233,639 voting "No" in the case of
the monopolies referendum. On the other
hand, Western Australia is the only section
of the Commonwealth to approve of the at
tempt to do away , with certain neces
sary State rights, the "Yes"' majorities be
ing 5,047 in the Legislative Powers referen
dumand 5,695 in the other. Allowing for
the Western Australian vote, it will be seen
that the actual "No" majorities for the
whole of the Commonwealth, so far as the
count has proceeded are respectively 237,455
and 227,944. The particular features of the
voting in Western Australia were the polls
at: Kalgoorlie and Coolgaridie, where the
majorities in favour of the referenda were
approximately, nine to one and three to one
respectively. Of course, the figures are still
incomplete, but the additional returns to be
received cannot affect the ultimate result.
