NAZI BLOWS HELD
Reds Throw Back Attacks
On Two Fronts
CRIMEA BREAK-THROUGH
LONDON, Fri. (AAP).
THE Russians have stemmed a new and violent Ger-
man counter-blow against their Narva River bridge-
head on the Estonian front, and have blunted von Man-
stein's reckless assault on their positions in the Car-
pathian foothills and passes near Stanislawow.
Although von Manstein's efforts to throw the Rus-
sians out of their Carpathian positions have reached
a new peak of fury in their third day, they have made
no progress, and he is being forced to send some of
his tank reserves to meet new Russian pressure to the
north, near Tarnopol.
IN the Crimea, the Russians have
burst through the first line of
the German's Sebastopol defences
and are digging Nazis and Ruman-
ians from their fortifications, while
the Red Fleet and Red Air Force
continue to wipe out enemy troops
attempting to escape by sea.
Reuters Moscow correspondent
says: "Continuous assaults by major
forces marked the third day of von
Manstein's attack against Marshal
Zhukov's advanced positions, but so
far the German efforts have failed.
The Germans unsuccessfully sent as
many as 80 tanks and 120 planes
into single actions. One Russian
unit repelled 15 attacks in 24 hours
The midnight Moscow communi-
que says more than 2,000 enemy
dead were left on the Narva battle-
field yesterday
South-west of Tarnopol the Rus-
sians dislodged the enemy from sev-
eral inhabited places and consider-
ably improved their own positions.
A supplementary communique
says: 'East and south of Stanislawow.
large enemy forces repeatedly at-
tacked our positions from two direc-
tions. All thrusts were repelled with
heavy losses. On one sector more
than 1,500 Germans were killed. In
another area an enemy battalion
which penetrated our positions, was
surrounded arid wiped out."
Ankara Radio says Soviet troops
have broken the defence ring
around Sebastopol, and have pene-
trated the city, where street fight-
ing is in progress.
Moscow Radio says: "The curtain
has gone up on the last act of the
Crimea drama. A mighty artillery
barrage is slashing asunder the Ger-
man defences and the Sebastopol gar-
rison is reeling back.
"Soviet tanks are passing through
the gap.
"The main body of the Axis forces
already has been eliminated, and it
will not be long before the remainder
are killed or captured."
British United Press Moscow cor-
respondent says German attempts to
extricate troops from the doomed
fortress by sea have failed hopeless-
ly. The old sea route to Constanza
(Rumania) is virtually carpeted with
Russian mines, while over the seas
high-level bombers and low-level
Stormoviks are maintaining attacks
against anything German that floats,
from, big ships to rowing boats. Ten
fair sized vessels were sunk in Se-
bastopol harbour in the past 24 hours.
Black Sea Fleet torpedo bombers
this week attacked four enemv con-
voys between Sebastopol and Ru-
manian ports. They sank four trans-
ports and damaged three. The ships
ranged from. 2.000 to 5.000 tons.
