RATIONING
PLAN
Big Saving In
Dollars
CANBERRA, Thursday.-A saving
in dollar exchange equivalent to
£4,500,000 Australian currency Is ex-
pected hy the Federal Government to
result from the decision to reduce
civil consumption of petrol by one
third by rationing.
Announcing this today, the Minister
for Supply (Sir Frederick Stewart) said
that the result of rationing would not im-
mediately be reflected in reduced foreign
payments for petrol. This was because
the Government intended to continue im-
portations at the present rate to build
up stocks for defence purposes. The sav-
ing, however, would be effected just the
same because, if rationing were not ap-
plied, expenditure would have to be in-
creased to enable the defence stocks to
be built up concurrently with normal
imports for civil use.
The importation of motor spirit hud
not declined, the Minister for Supply
told Mr. Penkins (U.A.P., N.S.W.), in the
House of Representatives today. Sir
Frederick said that imports would be
maintained at their present level, at least
to build up reserve stocks, despite any
reduction in consumption.
