OMINOUS
SIGNS
Nazi Troops
Massing
Move Likely
PARIS, December 22.
The War Office spokesman
said the Germans were pois-
ed for an attack on the Bel-
gian, Dutch, and Luxem-
burg frontiers. The posi-
tion was similar to that of last
November. The troops prob-
ably would move within 48
hours, and were receiving
marching orders. The chances
of success, however, were
more remote than ever. It
was a case of having been
forewarned and, therefore,
forearmed.
The Siegfried Line is undergoing an
extension eastward along the Rhine as
far as Lake Constance.
An Amsterdam message says anti-
aircraft guns tired at three unidentified
foreign aeroplanes flying over Arnhem
from the south-east. Dutch fighters
are reported to have engaged the ma-
chines, which escaped behind smoke-
screens.
A Brussels message says it was
announced officially that Belgian
fighters and anti-aircraft guns drove
off German aeroplanes at various
points. One German opened fire as
he fled northwards. The Government
of Belgium has protested to Germany.
A German high command commun-
ique on the Western Front said there
was slightly more intensive local artil-
lery activity. A French reconnais-
sance aeroplane was brought down near
the frontier.
An Allied communique reported that
conditions on the Western Front were
quiet following aerial activity yester-
day.
