ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN A
WATCHOUSE.
STRANGE REVELATIONS.
Melbourne, December 10.
In the strange case of attempted suicide
by John Leslie at the South Melbourne
lock-up, the Chief Commissioner of Police
has had a report made by Sergeant Monck-
ton and endorsed by Inspector Webb. In
this Sergeant Monckton alleges that as
soon as the man was found to have at
tempted to commit suicide Dr. C. Stewart
was sent for, and as he said the man had
not more than five minutes' life a
cart was sent for to carry the body
to the morgue. As the body showed
occasional movement it was net then re
moved, and the sergeant and the watch
house-keener visited the cell every few
minutes tall past 7 o'clock, when the man
was taken to the Melbourne Hospital.
The reason the prisoner was not searched
was thai he came from the Melbourne
Hospital, where it is usual to take
weapons from the patients. Mr.
Chomley, in view of the doctor's opinion,
considers further action on his part not
called for, as .Let-lie had attempted to
commit suicide before. It seems strange
that he should have been able to secure a
knife at the Melbourne Hospital.
