HUON AIRPORT
Local Government Act
Hitch
i Establishment of an aerodrome on the
site selected at Huonville last week ls
likely to be held up by the provisions
of tho Local Government Act. Tho Act
lays down spheres In which councils
may expend their funds, and aerodromes
are .'hot included. Tho Huon Council
has.been reminded of this fact, yet the
Wynyard and nearly - completed
Queenstown flying fields were con-
structed by the local governing bodies,
with Government assistance. ....
Tho positionna.rather obscure, but lt
ls hoped soon to have an amendment to
the' Act introduced to provide for ex-
penditure on such works. In any caso,
the Aero Club and Huon onthusiastB
hope to bo able to improve tho site suf-
ficiently to enable.flying to bo carried on
thora on a temporary permit from tho
Civil Aviation Department.,
The site, about a milo to tho north-
west Of the town and adjacent to tho
recreation ground, is; admirably suited
for the purpose, and thc only work re-
quired' immediately will be the removal
pf a fenco, the fllling-ln of a ditch, and
minpr levelling operations. About six
Huon residents aro already flying with
the club at Cambridge, and 20 more have
signified their desire to fly.
The Queenstown field will bo com-
pleted shortly, despite difficulties of
drainage, and with Swansea selected as
the';next site for. a licensed ^airport,
country districts should. bo: provided
soon with excellent amateur flying faci-
lities.
