House Majority Men Refrain From
Comment on Action in Zulueta Case
The members of the majority of
the house of representatives are re
luctant to define their course on the
incident that resulted in the resig-
nation of Rep. Jose C. Zulueta as
speaker pro-tempore of the house.
The question is delicate, they
say, and have agreed not to take
it up for a few days. This was
the statement made by Rep. Ma-
galona. Rep. Ortega, Rep. Angara.
Rep. Ozamis, Rep. Villanueva ancl
others.
At their caucus last night, accord
ing to the gentlemen mentioned, no
one raised the Zulueta incident.
Rep. Zulueta, who arrived in the
session hall after his colleagues
had repaired to the caucus room,
did not attend the caucus. Rep.
Angara, Rep. Megalona and Rep.
Ozamis confirmed this report.
Asked about his resignation, Rep.
Zulueta said that he meant what he
3aid. He declared that he had been
born a poor man and can remain
a simple member of the house of
representatives, a position that
cannot be taken away from him
without the people's consent.
After the caucus, Rep. Zulueta :
chatted with Rep. Oppus and Rep.
Angara, members of the reconcilia
tion committee. They declared that
so far no formula of -Element ha?
been reached.
The following statement was is
sued by Rep. Zulueta last night:
"The press carries information,
wherein some statements are attri
buted to Speaker Paredes. Insofar
as it refers to me I can only say
that I am willing to renounce the
most coveted number in the world
provided that I do not lose my
most intimate friends. What I
only deplore is that a question so
trivial as this one has been taken
advantage by the press to discuss
it publicly."
From sources close to the office
of the speaker pro-tempore, infor
mation was obtained that Rep. Zu
lueta, as speaker pro-tempore, does
not use the plate number of Speaker
Paredes. It is also said that Speak
er Paredes has car plate Nos 1-3
and 1-3-B. Rep. Zulueta has 1-3-C,
and that, therefore, they are not
the same.
It is also said that Senator Cla-
rin as president pro-tempore of
the senate uses No. 1-2-B even when
President Quezon is in the Philip
pines. The department under-sec-
retaries, it is also said, use the
same numbers as the secretaries.
They are distinguished only by the
letters a, b, c, d, etc.
If no amicable understanding is
reached in a few day:?, according to
information, the majority will de
cide the incident. If Speaker Pa
redes is sustained, it is said, a new
speaker pro-tempore will be elected.
